A full day wading Río Maullín near Puerto Varas for wild rainbow and brown trout, with a certified bilingual guide, all gear and a riverside lunch.
Río Maullín flows out of Lago Llanquihue, the lake at the foot of Volcán Osorno, and holds wild rainbow and brown trout. Your guide is CAEC-certified, bilingual in Spanish and English, and has more than ten years on these rivers. The day is spent on quiet stretches of the Maullín, wading through native arrayán and coigüe forest, reading the water and presenting dry flies and nymphs to rising fish.
Pickup is at 7:30 am at your hotel in Puerto Varas or Puerto Montt. On the drive your guide covers casting technique, what the fish are eating and how to read the water, and beginners get a 20-minute casting clinic before stepping into the river. The morning is spent in the pools and riffles of the upper river. At midday your guide lights the parrilla on the bank for chorizo, seasonal vegetables and bread, with a glass of Chilean red wine. In the afternoon you move downstream to deeper, shaded pools where larger browns hold, and fish until 5 pm.
Everything is supplied: Sage rods, Scientific Anglers lines, hand-tied local flies, waders, boots and your Chilean fishing license. First-timers learn from scratch, and experienced anglers get technical fishing for wild, pressured trout. Groups are 1–4 people.
