Mountains & volcanoes · Lake District
A guided glacier climb of Volcán Osorno (2,652 m, about +1,400 m) from Puerto Varas, with crampons, ice axe and a certified mountain guide.
Volcán Osorno is the snow-covered cone that rises to 2,652 m above Lago Llanquihue, inside Parque Nacional Vicente Pérez Rosales. The normal route gains about 1,400 m from the Refugio Teski parking lot to the summit, and the upper mountain is glacier terrain where crampons and an ice axe are needed. From the top you look out over Lago Llanquihue.
The day before, you meet your guide for a briefing and equipment fitting. On climb day you are picked up at your hotel in Puerto Varas at 4:30 am and start walking from Refugio Teski before 6 am. Around 9 am you switch to crampons and ice axe for the glacier. The group has a strict 1 pm summit cutoff: if you are not on top by then, you turn around. You descend on foot, or in winter on skis if you are an advanced skier, and are back at Refugio Teski around 5 pm, with drop-off at your hotel in Puerto Varas the same evening.
This climb is for people in very good physical condition. Prior winter or glacier mountaineering experience, with crampon and ice-axe skills, is recommended. Your certified mountain guide carries rope, a first-aid kit and an inReach satellite communicator, and adapts the technical approach to summer or winter snow. Groups are 1–4 people.

It is an advanced climb: about 1,400 m of elevation gain from Refugio Teski to the 2,652 m summit, with glacier sections on crampons. You need very good physical condition to keep the pace needed for the 13:00 cutoff.
Expect about 5 to 6 hours of climbing to the summit. The full day runs from a 04:30 pickup in Puerto Varas to around 17:00 back at Refugio Teski.
We run it in summer, from November to March, and in winter, from July to October. Winter adds the option of a ski descent for advanced skiers.
No. The summit depends on weather, snow conditions and the group's pace. If you haven't reached the top by 13:00, the group turns around, and your guide can end the climb earlier for safety.
Semi-rigid or rigid mountain boots that take crampons, plus warm technical layers, gloves, a hat, sunglasses and sun protection. Crampons, ice axe, helmet and harness are provided.
Your guide picks you up at your hotel in Puerto Varas at 04:30 and drives you to the Refugio Teski parking lot, about an hour away. Drop-off is at your hotel in Puerto Varas the same day.
